How to buy sandalwood
Here is Veerappan ;) explaining how to buy sandalwood... !
Sandalwood has unique natural properties and widely used for skin/acne care ...So, I was searching for Sandalwood billet to buy. And here goes how I got it.
Every state in India has its own rules on how much sandalwood individual can possess/have. Sandalwood is classified as scheduled timber (I don't have any idea what they mean by calling scheduled timber). Sandalwood was smuggled and so, its movement, cultivation, sale - everything is monitored by government as per the state rules.
Legal purchase can be made from state / government owned handicrafts store Like Poombukar (Tamilnadu Handicrafts), Lepakshi, Khadi Gramodyog, etc., Buying from government is good since they sell original sandalwood. The current price of sandalwood is Rs.12000 to Rs.13000 INR per kg + tax. Sandalwood is sold as small chips / billet. Less expensive sandalwood is also available and its not advised to buy these, since after extracting Sandalwood oil they sell dead wood (No therapeutic uses) with some fragrance.
You can also buy figures carved out of sandalwood, this can be used for decoration / showcase. For using sandalwood you need to buy only chips/ billet of the wood.
You can buy sandalwood products in india from the following online sites - I got it from one of the below links.
They sell - sandalwood soaps, perfume, oil, wood / billets, wood powder, carved toys, furniture, key chain, pen, dry mala (garland), incense sticks, etc.,

If you are out of india and are looking for import-export of sandalwood, you may want to read this (Indian import foreign trade policy - circular on sandalwood) - http://www.cybex.in/Notifications/Circular-23-Import-Sandal-Wood-5916.aspx Any Indian who has a import license can import 5000 cubic meters of sandal wood per year - i think so, as per the circular....
Other countries where sandalwood is in abundance are Vanuatu, South Pacific, Sri lanka / Ceylon , some african countries.., Indian Sandalwood has huge demand worldwide and the supply is currently way under the demand.
Currently the law has changed, and Indian citizens can own a sandalwood plant/tree... Lot of activity happening around the sales of sandalwood seedlings / plantations all around.
